The Pebbles Story, Pebbles, Newbury

The opening of Pebbles was the culmination of ambitious dreams and plenty of hard work for husband and wife owners, Steve and Theresa Fish.

Last year they bought Harpers Hair & Beauty in Cheap Street, Newbury and quickly established a good reputation in the town, but the small premises and aging equipment was always going to hold that salon back.

That was when the couple had the vision to take the salon out of the town centre entirely and use vacant space adjacent to and above the One Stop Service Centre in Faraday Road, already owned by Steve.

He explained: "Straight away it gave us the space to expand the salon, add a cutting bar and much larger and more friendly treatment rooms too. We were already encouraging One Stop clients to visit Harpers and similarly salon customers were bringing their cars here. With the move we could justify the investment in new equipment and expand our services, together with recruiting additional members of staff too.

However, the name for the new salon was proving a bit more elusive! Theresa takes up the story: "We had been racking our brains and trying out different names but nothing seemed to fit what we were trying to do. I was sat in our garden and the water feature trickles over some pebbles - and I thought 'that's it! Pebbles' and Steve loved it and everyone gave us good feedback so Pebbles became the name.

"There was a good atmosphere at Harpers, but we were never going to fulfil our potential there. Here we have been able to create our dream salon, where we can deliver the customer service people deserve."
